在对两种事物的特徵做比较时，我们会用到一套标准规则。
特徵相等时
要比较两个具有相等特徵的事物非常简单，我们会用这样的公式来表达：
as 描述特徵的形容词 as
举例
- tom is as tall as his brother.
- i am as hungry as you are.
- sally is as nice as jane.
特徵不相等时
如果两个特徵不相等，可以用以下三种句型来表达，无论用哪一种，意思都是差不多的。
第一种：
not as 描述特徵的形容词 as
第二种：
less 描述特徵的形容词 than：这种句型会频繁地用在某些形容词。
第三种：
形容词比较级 than：此结构需要改变词组的顺序，或用相对的形容词来表达。
举例
- mont blanc is not as high as mount everest.
- mont blanc is less high than mount everest.
- mont blanc is lower than mount everest.
- mount everest is higher than mont blanc.
- norway is not as sunny as thailand.
- norway is less sunny than thailand.
- thailand is sunnier than norway.
- norway is cloudier than thailand.
